What is a Paralegal

A paralegal is a professional in legal representation, licensed and governed by the Law Society of Ontario, the same body that regulates lawyers in Ontario. Paralegals are required to be educated and insured, and are held to the same high standards of competence as lawyers.

Paralegals are permitted to provide full legal representation in a variety of areas including Small Claims Court, Provincial Offences and summary conviction matters under the Criminal Code of Canada. There are over 200 tribunals, agencies, boards and commissions where paralegals are permitted to provide legal representation, including the Landlord Tenant Board and the Municipal Property Tax Assessment Board.
